on adderall

I clearly remember all of the 90's anti drug commercials that would air during x-men, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and power rangers, or pete and Pete and Pete. I never had any clue why someone would do drugs, I had no grasp on the concept of being "high" or what drugs did to the consciousness.

Until 8th grade, when I got put on Adderall.i had gone from accelerated, gifted and talented, and honor roll to not giving one hot fuck about school around 6th grade. All the adults were baffled.
It was the lare 1990's and any kid that fucked off in school was diagnosed with adhd. Some child psychiatrist told my parents that I had ADHD, and I should try 20mg of Adderall xr (amphetamine salts).

Seeing kids head to the nurses office after lunch for their Ritalin or Adderall was a very normal part of the school day in the 90's and in the fall of 1999 I joined them. It went swimmingly... at first.

Razor sharp focus, straight A's, happy teachers and happy parents. The legal speed was great until I stopped eating and sleeping for days on end.

I was in this special education study hall, and all of us in there were total Speed freaks.

That's where I met Dennis.

Dennis was the only punk rocker in Plymouth south middle school. He had spiked hair, tight ripped jeans and a denim vest covered in minor threat, dead Kennedys and black flag patches. I'll never forget his response to the teacher asking him how he was doing.

"Well, in the past week I've eaten the equivalent of a meal and slept about 5 hours. Last night I tried to masturbate and couldn't even perform...so I'm not really holding up that well, honestly."

I could understand where Dennis was coming from. I had been up for a few days, I was somewhat psychotic, and had chewed the inside of my mouth into ground beef.

Dennis seemed so fearless and original, we quickly became friends. He introduced me to the wonders of hard-core music. Fast aggressive two minute songs with angry cynical lyrics about non conformity, I could really dig it at that time.

Minor threat, fear, dead Kennedys, operation ivy and black flag were all I downloaded on Napster...after all Henry Rollins was the original Ritalin kid.

Anger, teen angst and crystal meth's first cousin at age 13....what a combination!

I always looked at it (adderall) as chemically turning children into these perfectly productive robots that would make great cubicle dwellers in the future economy. The next generation of wage slaves...how dystopian and orwellian!?

Adderall was my first drug. I eventually got off of it but it returned to cause havoc later in life, that's a whole different story. Adderall is not for me. I still listen to minor threat and Fear, though.
